To tackle congestion and improve safety around local schools, Derby City Council introduced the School Safe Havens initiative—an approach designed to protect children, encourage active travel, and ease traffic at the school gates.
DERBY, ENGLAND — The School Safe Havens program focuses on reducing vehicle build-up during drop-off and pick-up times, making school zones safer, calmer, and healthier for young people. By partnering with Intelliscape, Derby City Council deployed advanced enforcement technologies that discourage unsafe driving behaviours, support compliance with restrictions, and promote safer routes for walking and cycling.
CHALLENGES
Increased congestion and unsafe parking near school entrances during peak hours.
Reduced visibility and hazardous crossing conditions for students and parents.
Driving positive behaviours change and encourage cycling and walking.

“Roadflow systems have significantly improved safety and reduced traffic around schools.”
Rob Shoebridge, Derby City Council
